Note: This is the only route I know of from McCammon to Lava Hot Springs that completely avoids the dangerous Highway 30. The distance to Lava from McCammon on this route is just a tad more than double the distance using Highway 30. Much of Smith Canyon Road is dirt/gravel and would be unsuitable for high-pressure, thin tires (23mm). Wide, low-pressure tires should do fine (38mm+). Click here for images.

This is by no means an ideal route, unless you're looking for a challenge. There is ~1813ft of climbing over a period of 6.4mi, starting at E. Smith Canyon Road. However, after the climb, there is a long descent (~4-5 miles) that will likely allow you to coast at high speeds the entire way to Lava. Not beginner friendly!
